The Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium (PGSC) is an international group of academic and industrial organisations that are committed to sequence the complete potato genome to meet the world's food needs in the future.

The PGSC is being coodinated by the Laboratory of Plant Breeding, Dept. of Plant Sciences, Wageningen University and Research Centre

Director: Prof. Richard Visser.

Primary objective
The primary objective of the Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium (PGSC) is to elucidate the complete DNA sequence of the potato genome (850 Mbp) by the end of 2010. This task will be performed by a consortium of international parties who are experienced in large scale sequencing efforts and have an excellent track record in potato research.
Genomics for sustainable crops and plant products
For centuries man has developed crop plants that have many advantages compared to natural (wild) plants. Further improvement of crops requires knowledge of the biosystems of plants in their environment and in the product chain. The focus of our programme is on sustainable traits influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors. New crops will be more resistant to diseases to reduce pesticides in agriculture. Natural traits related to health and food safety are the target of breeding programmes for consumer products. Genomics provides the chance to unravel these so-called multifactorial traits.
